Commitment is defined as: the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc. Doesn’t that sound reasonable to the ear. I think so to be honest. Nothing to crazy happening there in that definition at all. So why is that when someone is all to commit to something there is a slight sense of resistance from them. Maybe it is because of this definition of commitment: an engagement or obligation that restricts freedom of action. There it is. That is the reason there is a hesitation when it comes to commitment. People for the most part fear restrictions. I personally see restrictions as guidelines for the field of play not so much as a negative thing. Just as an obstacle to work around to reach my goal/ task.
With the new year, underway I thought it was only best to write about commitment. New Year resolutions are running rapid now but to be honest for most people they are wish lists of things they want this year. How many of those people are really gonna follow through on their commitments? I can tell you the ones what will have the best chance are the folks that plan on how they are going accomplish them. Not a shotgun plan of I will just eat right or I will just do such and such more. I am talking about a well thought out plan with steps, checkpoints, and timelines towards. With being in the military we are trained to accomplish all tasks. A simple acronym (we love acronyms) that we are taught is the SMART (Specific, Measurable w/Measurement, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Oriented). I am not going to get into what each of these mean but I will say that with the use of each of those you will build a plan that will help you reach you goal and complete your commitment. If you willing to do it.
Most people won’t take the time to sit down and plan to fulfil the things they claim to be committed too. Which then turns it into a wish list like I said before. I believe that is caused by not having to proper motivation to complete the task. I am not in to say that I haven’t do the same in the past. Wrote goals down at the beginning of the year and didn’t plan them out. And I got a whole goose egg of them completed by the end of the year. In the beginning of 2016 I went in with a written-out plan for three different goals. I completed and exceeded the expectations for 2 of 3 goals. I am proud of that and I want to make sure that I can pass that on to others. All my goals had a deeper meaning for me. My career goals were based around the fact that I almost lost my military career in 2015 so I had to redeem myself. Not just for myself but in the eyes of others and the people that aided me in keeping my career. My financial goals were rooted in the fact that I would have put my family in real trouble if I was kicked out of the military. I completed that goal by being discipline in putting money away. Finally, I had fitness goals that a failed because I didn’t find the right motivations to keep to my commitment. Motivation towards your commitment determines the outcome before you even start. Pick the right one.
To conclude my commitments for 2017 are as follows:
- Make every effort to grow this blog by making post every week, creating a Facebook, Instagram and Youtube page during the year.
- Make every effort to train as a triathlete.
- Train to compete in a fitness competition of some kind this year. All the while documenting the journey.
- Grow as a Crossfit coach to impact someone’s life in the most powerful way possible to them.
- Be the best example of health for my two boys.
